Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is used to treat patients with any fear of coming to the dentist. A mask is placed over the nose and patient begins to breathe a mixture of sedative gas and oxygen. The process is safe and allows the patient to return to normal daily activity after their appointment.
Another type is conscious sedation where patients take a pill one hour prior to treatment. This puts the patient to sleep and requires a driver for the patient after treatment. It is totally safe and effective.
